The City of St. Catharines invites applications for the position of Probationary Fire Fighter, a vital role dedicated to ensuring the safety, protection, and well-being of residents and visitors. Joining the City of St. Catharines Fire Services means becoming part of a team that values courage, teamwork, and professionalism. Fire Fighters respond to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, and technical rescues, while also participating in prevention programs, training, and public outreach.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond promptly and safely to fire alarms, medical emergencies, rescue calls, and other incidents requiring fire department intervention.

  • Operate and maintain fire apparatus, tools, and equipment in accordance with departmental policies and safety standards.

  • Conduct fire suppression, rescue operations, and hazardous materials response in alignment with NFPA and departmental procedures.

  • Administer first aid, CPR, and life-saving techniques as a Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider.

  • Participate in ongoing training, drills, and professional development activities to maintain peak operational readiness.

  • Engage in public education initiatives to promote fire prevention, safety awareness, and emergency preparedness.

  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation of incidents, equipment checks, and training.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.

  • Driver’s Licence: Valid Ontario Class "D" Licence with "Z" Air Brake Endorsement (or equivalent Class A, B, or C Licence with Z).

  • Certifications:

    • NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 1 & Level 2 Certification

    • Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider (valid and current)

    • Standard First Aid Level C (valid and current)

  • Additional education or specialized training in emergency services, trades, or post-secondary studies is considered an asset.


Additional Requirements:

  • Completion of the Ministry of Labour’s Worker Health and Safety Awareness training prior to employment.

  • Proof of educational credentials and certifications will be required.

  • Must possess a Class DZ Driver’s Licence.

  • Ability to work variable hours and schedules as operationally required.

  • Annual Salary: CA$70,415.15 (as per July 1, 2023 rates)
