This is a Full-Time position that is scheduled during 6:30 am - 7:30 pm for an 8 hour shift Monday through Saturday depending on the needs of the clinic. This role reports to the Manager, Laboratory Services.
Our Downtown Toronto clinic is conveniently located at 150 York St. (York and Adelaide) which is nearby St. Andrew and King subway stations or a 10-minute walk from Union Station!
What You'll Do:
- Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture and capillary punctures) to collect blood samples from clients.
- Identify clients ensuring samples are accurately labeled before testing, adhering to legal and laboratory procedural requirements.
- Process and prepare samples for testing in compliance with laboratory standards and procedures.
- Prioritize and arrange daily activities based on the urgency of sample collection requests, maintaining an organized workflow within the clinic and the laboratory.
- Follow all health, safety, and infection control policies to maintain a safe environment for clients and staff.
- Utilize effective communication to explain procedures to clients, reassuring them and addressing any concerns to facilitate a smooth and comfortable sample collection process.
- Greet and request required information from clients, explain the sample collection process, and ensure clients have followed necessary test protocol prior to sample collection.
- Escorting clients to and from waiting lounges located throughout the clinic.
- Document and maintain client and sample information within the LIS.
- Participate in ongoing education and professional development to remain current with industry standards.
- Monitor the testing add-ons list and prepare send-out samples for external testing as required.
- Identify incidents and non-conformities, participating in the development of effective corrective action plans, escalating issues as appropriate and driving continuous improvement.
- Assist in the onboarding and training of new phlebotomists.
- Participate in the competency assessments.
What You'll Need:
- Proof of Personal Liability Insurance (PLI) with MLPAO or CSMLS
- Completion of accredited training program in phlebotomy
- 2+ years experience in phlebotomy including venipuncture, capillary collection, and specimen handling.
- CPR certification
- Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology
- Prior experience as a Phlebotomist, preferably in a clinic setting
- Superior organization and time management skills
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and quality in all tasks
- Problem solving skills, including the ability to identify and follow-up on issues
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) to effectively interact with clients of all ages and backgrounds
- Ability to maintain the strictest standards of safety, client privacy and confidentiality
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and adapt to varying patient needs
- Advanced level in Microsoft 365, Teams and Outlook
