The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in Nuclear Law to join the Faculty of Law & Justice in collaboration with the Nuclear Innovation Centre within the Faculty of Engineering. This prestigious three-year appointment offers a unique opportunity for early-career researchers to contribute to groundbreaking, cross-disciplinary research at one of Australia’s top-ranked law schools.
Based at the Kensington campus in Sydney, the Postdoctoral Fellow will engage in world-class research focused on the legal, ethical, and regulatory dimensions of nuclear energy. The role will involve developing innovative scholarship in nuclear law, strengthening global collaboration, contributing to interdisciplinary curriculum development, and enhancing UNSW’s global leadership in ethical nuclear innovation.
This position reports to Professor Lucas Lixinski (Faculty of Law & Justice) and works closely with Associate Professor Edward Obbard (Nuclear Innovation Centre), Professor Natalie Klein, and Adjunct Associate Professor Helen Cook.
Conduct high-quality, original research in nuclear law and related fields such as international institutional law, law of the sea, and general international law.
Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams across law, engineering, and policy to develop impactful and practical research outcomes.
Publish research findings in leading academic journals and present at conferences, symposia, and panels.
Assist in developing cross-disciplinary curriculum related to nuclear law and ethics.
Provide research support for faculty-led projects and participate in thought leadership activities that shape global discourse on nuclear law and innovation.
Uphold strong governance frameworks for research, including ethics approvals, reporting, and documentation.
Contribute to the broader academic community by mentoring students, coordinating research activities, and participating in departmental initiatives.
A PhD in nuclear law, international institutional law, law of the sea, international law, or a related discipline.
Proven ability to conduct independent and collaborative research of a high academic standard.
Strong record of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
Potential for leadership and agenda-setting contributions within nuclear law scholarship.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in cross-disciplinary teams.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and project management skills.
