National Politics Reporter

Rabble.ca, Canada’s original independent online progressive media outlet, is hiring a National Politics Reporter to join its federal reporting team for a 9-week term beginning in mid-May 2025. rabble.ca specializes in covering grassroots social and labour movements, with a unique editorial lens focused on stories and perspectives not often found in mainstream media.

The successful candidate will contribute three to four news articles weekly, focused on national politics with an emphasis on labour, Indigenous issues, feminism, and other underreported topics. Additionally, the reporter will produce one monthly long-form interview for rabble radio and may participate in live media events. The role also includes some editorial duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • File 3–4 news stories or reports per week on federal political issues

  • Develop profiles, fact checks, and feature articles suited for rabble's readership

  • Contribute one long-form audio interview monthly for rabble radio

  • Participate in live events and editorial meetings as needed

  • Occasionally edit contributions related to politics, Indigenous issues, and feminism

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proven track record in national political reporting

  • Deep understanding of the intersections between federal politics and social justice issues

  • Strong news judgment and passion for progressive political storytelling

  • Experience with trauma-informed reporting practices

  • Excellent writing, editing, and organizational skills

  • Ability to meet deadlines independently

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Reporting experience on Indigenous issues and movements

  • Experience reporting from Parliament Hill

  • Multimedia journalism skills (video, photography, audio)

  • Familiarity with Canadian Press style guidelines

  • Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset

Terms & Eligibility:

  • 9-week full-time contract (30 hours/week)

  • Compensation: $23–26/hour

  • Applicants must be 30 years of age or under at the time of hiring (Canada Summer Jobs funding requirement)

  • Must reside in the Ottawa region

  • Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis
