The Fredericton Region Museum is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Museum Intern to serve as an assistant to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and project leads, aiding in the management of all facets of museum operations over an 11-month period. The position requires a creative, responsible, and reliable candidate with demonstrated education, work, or volunteer experience in museum studies. This entails a comprehensive understanding of museum principles and practices, including collections management, conservation of museum artefacts, public programming, community engagement, museum education, curatorship, exhibit design and installation, as well as fundraising. The ideal candidate will possess a post-secondary degree or certification in museum studies (or equivalent). An ability to prioritize within the goals of the museum Board is essential.

Key responsibility areas

This position encompasses a range of responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Collaborating with committee chairs;
  • Ensuring the care and maintenance of collections;
  • Designing and implementing public programming activities;
  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Fredericton Region Museum;
  • Assisting in the development of museum exhibitions;
  • Conducting research and drafting grant applications from both public and private sources (e.g., Young Canada Works);
  • Cultivating relationships with local Indigenous communities;
  • Managing the museum's online presence, including the website, Facebook page, and other social media platforms;
  • Engaging with teachers and delivering outcome-driven education programs;
  • Expanding and maintaining the museum's artefact collections database.

Education, Skills, and Experience

  • Hold a post-secondary degree (or certification) in museum studies from an accredited university or post-secondary college;
  • Demonstrate experience in museums, event planning, collections care, exhibit development, education programming, and project management;
  • Demonstrate strong writing skills in at least one official language;
  • Demonstrate strong time management skills necessary for handling a diverse range of tasks;
  • Showcase effective interpersonal, leadership, organizational, and self-management skills;
  • Demonstrate an ability to establish and meet deadlines;
  • Proficiency in both official languages will be a strong asset.
