Description:

CN, a leading North American transportation and logistics company, is seeking a Dangerous Goods Agent to support safe and efficient operations while contributing to emergency preparedness and regulatory compliance. This role involves hands-on emergency response to incidents involving hazardous materials or environmentally harmful products, along with training, awareness programs, inspections, and compliance checks.

Key Responsibilities:

Awareness and Training

  • Maintain positive relationships with regulators, public agencies, clients, and industry partners.

  • Engage stakeholders on safety and emergency response related to hazardous materials incidents.

  • Provide information and training to response agencies through CN’s TRANSCAER engagement.

  • Support operations during mandatory hazardous materials training.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Act as liaison with federal, provincial, state, and local agencies.

  • Participate in integrated safety audits and perform inspections of trains and yards to ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Serve as expert in hazardous materials compliance during local interventions.

Emergency Response and Preparedness

  • Organize and facilitate emergency response activities to ensure safe and effective interventions.

  • Respond to incidents and coordinate tactical interventions and mitigation activities.

  • Assess contractors’ emergency response capabilities.

  • Inspect and maintain CN emergency response equipment and deploy it effectively on-site.

Working Conditions:

  • Work occurs both in-office and outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • Normal work schedule is Monday–Friday, with on-call availability 24/7 for critical incidents.

  • Evening and weekend work may be required.

  • Must meet tight deadlines, tolerate pressure, manage stress, and work safely with personal protective equipment in hazardous conditions.

  • Occasional travel required (up to 35%) within Canada and the United States.

Qualifications:

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years practical experience in hazardous materials emergency response.

Training, Certification, and Education

  • Hazardous Materials Technician

  • Experienced Tank Car Specialist

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Command and industrial firefighting training

  • Flammable liquids, wildland firefighting, and foam trailer training*

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, firefighting, or related field*

  • Advanced tank car specialist course*

  • Incident command training, including NIMS 300 and 400*
    (*designations are assets, not mandatory)

Technical Knowledge

  • Toxicology, chemical/physical properties of hazardous materials, air quality monitoring, liquid and compressed gas transfers, explosives

  • Knowledge of hazardous materials transportation regulations (USOR, REFC, TP14877, CFR 49)

  • Awareness of regional emergency response companies and equipment

  • Bilingual in French and English*
