Description:

Marine Animal Response Society (MARS), a registered non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and conservation of marine wildlife, is seeking passionate individuals to join as MARS Response Volunteers. Volunteers will play an active and impactful role in responding to reports of dead or distressed marine animals across the Maritime Provinces. This role is ideal for nature enthusiasts, wildlife supporters, and individuals who want to contribute to meaningful conservation efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist MARS Responders in marine animal response operations.

  • Investigate and verify reports of stranded, injured, or deceased marine animals including whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, sharks, and other large wildlife.

  • Take photos and measurements of animals for proper documentation and scientific reporting.

  • Monitor the condition of live animals and provide timely updates to MARS Responders.

  • Assist in moving fresh carcasses from beaches or incident sites when necessary.

  • Help secure sites, manage public perimeters, and ensure safety during active response events.

  • Support data collection, photography, sample-taking, and participation in large whale necropsies or live stranding responses (with training).

  • Occasionally contribute to public outreach and awareness campaigns.

Qualifications:

  • Open to volunteers aged 18 and above.

  • Strong interest in marine animals, nature, and conservation.

  • Comfortable spending time outdoors and around water.

  • Must have a smartphone or digital camera, internet access, and a mobile phone for communication.

  • Ability to respond in a timely manner when available (flexibility provided).

  • Having a personal vehicle is considered an asset.

  • No prior experience is required – training and ongoing support will be provided.
