Description:

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Royal Alberta Museum, this position provides direction and leadership for the operation of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site, including preserving, presenting, and fostering appreciation of the site's historical resources and providing opportunities for heritage tourism. Working closely with Indigenous communities, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump strives to tell the stories of the site, buffalo, and Indigenous peoples. The position involves leadership development; providing a positive, productive, and safe work environment; contributing to collaborative and cross-ministry initiatives; demonstrating innovation; and building and sustaining positive and productive relationships with Blackfoot First Nations. The focus of the position is ensuring the proper care, treatment, and preservation of the historical resources and landscape associated with this World Heritage Site and Provincial Historic Resource and ensuring the authenticity of the visitor experiences that are provided by the site through ongoing relationships with community.

To be effective in this role, the position must work to ensure that visitors develop lifelong and personal connections to the site through innovative, inspiring, engaging, authentic, and educational experiences. The position works to identify and embrace opportunities to engage, partner with, and build relationships both internally and externally within the local community and communities across Alberta. Leading a team of full-time and contracted part-time staff, the Manager builds capacity and develops leaders, empowering the team to be creative and innovative in their problem solving.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Working closely with Indigenous communities, Elders, and knowledge holders to tell the stories of the site, the importance of the buffalo, and historic and contemporary Indigenous culture.
  • Establishing and maintaining beneficial community relationships with stakeholder organizations, including First Nations communities, regional and provincial tourism organizations, and other stakeholders with a special interest in Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. In particular, the position is expected to engage closely and meaningfully with First Nations communities and individuals in achieving the site's strategic and operational activities.
  • Managing, directing, and administering the annual operations and public programming of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site, to ensure the protection and preservation of the historical resources at this internationally-significant historic site for current and future generations.
  • Managing the development and implementation of interpretive, educational, and special event programming to communicate the heritage values of this World Heritage Site to provincial, national, and international audiences. This is accomplished by identifying and prioritizing program opportunities, building community partnerships and capacity, establishing funding strategies, and implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of programs delivered.
  • Working with officials from UNESCO to ensure that all necessary standards are followed to maintain world heritage site designation.
