Description:

The Salvation Army in Canada, a faith-based, community-focused organization serving more than 2 million individuals annually, is seeking a dedicated and skilled Cook to join its team in Prince Rupert, BC. This role is crucial in delivering nutritious meals to clients in accordance with the organization’s mission of compassion, dignity, and service.

As a Cook, you will be responsible for preparing and serving balanced meals that follow Canada’s Food Guide and dietician-approved menus while maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene. You will also participate in kitchen inventory management, food storage compliance, cleaning protocols, and interaction with team members and volunteers.


Key Responsibilities:

Food Preparation:

  • Prepare and serve nutritious meals using a variety of cooking techniques (e.g., boiling, baking, grilling, etc.)

  • Adhere strictly to Food Safe practices and health regulations

  • Rotate food inventory every three days and maintain proper food labeling, dating, and storage

  • Record food temperatures and ensure items are stored according to safety guidelines

  • Sequence food preparation to ensure timely service and minimal wastage

  • Assist with monthly and quarterly statistics for meal counts and volunteer hours

Health and Safety:

  • Clean and maintain kitchen appliances and food preparation areas to high standards

  • Conduct daily audits of fridge and freezer temperatures

  • Follow Universal Precautions and The Salvation Army's safety protocols

  • Maintain sanitary conditions in kitchen, storage, and dining areas

  • Handle waste removal and safe lifting techniques

  • Demonstrate excellent personal hygiene and wear a clean uniform with hair restraints when required

Communication & Team Collaboration:

  • Work closely with staff and volunteers, offering instruction and guidance when necessary

  • Maintain respectful communication with guests and staff

  • May provide support in the absence of Head Cook or Manager


Education, Certifications & Requirements:

  • Completion of a one-year post-secondary food services program

  • Red Seal Certification (mandatory)

  • Food Safe Level 1 (required); Level 2 considered an asset

  • Occupational First Aid Level 1, WHMIS, and Universal Precautions training

  • Completion of online Armatus Abuse Training and other organizational safety courses

  • Valid Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract (if required)

  • Clear background and vulnerable sector check

  • Able to lift up to 30 lbs and stand for long periods

  • Immunization for Hepatitis B and vaccinations against TB and flu (recommended)


Working Conditions:

  • Work environment includes kitchen, dining, and food storage areas

  • Exposure to heat, steam, noise, and potentially abusive behavior from guests

  • Risk of minor injury, including cuts, burns, slips, or physical strain

  • Must be able to handle high-pressure timelines and maintain calm under stress


Compensation:

💰 Salary Range: CA$18.99–23.73/hour (maximum CA$28.48/hour)
➡️ Monthly Approximation: CA$3038–4556
Final salary will be determined based on experience, skills, market conditions, and internal equity.
