Description:

AquaSensing is looking for a motivated and hands-on IoT Hardware Specialist to join their team in Waterloo, supporting the development of sensor-based IoT devices and wireless gateway systems. This position is ideal for candidates with practical experience in sensing electronics who are eager to grow their skills within a fast-paced, technically diverse environment.

The role involves assisting with the design, prototyping, and testing of low-power electronic circuits and sensor hardware. You will be closely involved in the integration of wireless communication modules such as BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and LoRa, as well as gateways that connect to the cloud through Wi-Fi or cellular networks (LTE/NB-IoT).

You will collaborate with firmware and software teams to ensure data flow and system reliability, conduct hands-on troubleshooting, participate in lab and field device testing, and support component procurement and assembly efforts.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in designing, prototyping, and testing sensor hardware and low-power electronics

  • Support development and integration of wireless modules (BLE, LoRa) and gateway systems (Wi-Fi, LTE/NB-IoT)

  • Build and test prototype boards and sensor nodes; troubleshoot and debug hardware issues

  • Collaborate with firmware and software teams to maintain data flow and system performance

  • Document hardware designs, wiring diagrams, and test procedures

  • Participate in lab and field testing including data collection and performance analysis

  • Assist in procurement and assembly of electronic components for development projects


Qualifications and Skills:

  • Diploma, vocational training, or bachelor’s degree in electronics, mechatronics, or a related field

  • 1 to 5 years of experience in hardware development, electronics assembly, or IoT device integration

  • Familiarity with analog/digital sensors and microcontrollers such as ESP32, STM32, or Arduino

  • Basic understanding of BLE, LoRa, and Wi-Fi wireless communication technologies

  • Hands-on skills in breadboarding, soldering, and use of lab tools like oscilloscopes and multimeters

  • Experience with PCB design software (KiCad, Eagle, Altium) and circuit simulation tools

  • Enthusiastic learner and problem solver in practical, real-world scenarios


Nice to Have:

  • Experience in low-power design and battery-operated systems

  • Exposure to gateway development using platforms like Raspberry Pi

  • Understanding of UART, I2C, SPI interfaces and fundamental RF principles

  • Previous involvement in IoT or smart home projects, whether personal or academic
