Indigenous Relations Strategic Planner

Description:

This position plays a critical role in advancing the City’s reconciliation efforts through high-profile, complex, and intersectional work. Moving beyond technical support, this role focuses on leading strategic plans, evaluation frameworks, and significant projects that address racism and inequity in Edmonton. You will act as a content expert and relationship builder, fostering integrated approaches with internal teams, Knowledge Keepers, Elders, and Indigenous governments to ensure our work honors our commitments to the community.

What will you do?

  • Plan and lead complex and sensitive projects, such as renaming initiatives, memorial site development, and large-scale engagement conferences related to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG)
  • Provide strategic support and advice to leadership, translating corporate strategies into operational plans and ensuring business processes align with the branch’s reconciliation goals
  • Develop data and evaluation frameworks that utilize Indigenous worldviews and decolonized approaches to research, ensuring projects are measured meaningfully
  • Cultivate and maintain meaningful relationships with community members, non-profit leaders, and representatives from First Nation and Métis governments to support joint operational planning
  • Identify strategic issues—such as urban reserves or UNDRIP implementation—and independently research and recommend solutions to the Director
  • Prepare briefing notes, council reports, and responses to inquiries from the community and elected officials regarding the section's initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Sociology, or a related field of study
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience including demonstrated competency in project management and strategic planning, including change management
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in community/social development, specifically working with Indigenous non-profits, organizations, leaders, community, and government
  • Lived experience with traditional Indigenous communities, history, culture and current environment. Preference will be given to First Nations, Metis, Inuit or non registered Indigenous persons within the Canadian context. If you are Indigenous, we encourage you to self-identify in your application
