Description:

We are partnering with one of Canada’s fastest-growing, most heavily-funded high-tech companies—a true market unicorn known for innovation and rapid expansion. This company is seeking an experienced In-house Counsel specializing in Employment Law to take ownership of their global employment law portfolio.

In this pivotal role, you will serve as the legal expert for all employment-related matters, providing strategic and practical advice to the business to ensure compliance, minimize risk, and support the company’s growth.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of employment agreements, severance packages, non-compete agreements, and workplace policies that align with local and international employment laws.

  • Manage and resolve employee relations issues including disputes, grievances, investigations, and disciplinary actions, working closely with Human Resources to provide proactive legal guidance.

  • Oversee employment litigation and manage relationships with external counsel when necessary, ensuring the company’s interests are vigorously protected.

  • Support integration activities during employee acquisitions and mergers, advising on employment law implications to ensure smooth transitions.

  • Provide legal advice and support to commercial teams on employment-related issues connected to contracts, secondments, or joint ventures.

  • Keep abreast of evolving employment laws and regulations across jurisdictions relevant to the company’s global workforce, ensuring proactive compliance.

  • Develop, implement, and train internal stakeholders on employment policies, best practices, and legal updates to foster a compliant and respectful workplace culture.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with business leaders, HR, and external advisors to support strategic workforce initiatives and growth objectives.


Qualifications:

  • 5 to 10 years of progressive experience practicing employment law, ideally within a corporate or in-house legal department setting, preferably in the technology or high-growth sectors.

  • Proven track record in handling complex employment law issues including contracts, disputes, investigations, and litigation.

  • Strong knowledge of Canadian employment standards, human rights legislation, privacy laws, and familiarity with multi-jurisdictional issues is highly advantageous.

  • Excellent negotiation, drafting, and interpersonal skills, with an ability to provide clear, business-focused legal advice.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

  • Highly collaborative with strong communication skills, able to influence and build trust with various stakeholders across the organization.
