Description:
CN is seeking a Heavy Equipment and Trailer Mechanic to inspect, maintain, and repair locomotives and related equipment. The role requires working in a safety-focused environment on cutting-edge equipment that supports North American freight transport. Selected candidates will undergo paid theoretical and practical training to develop expertise in diesel engines, locomotive systems, and CN maintenance regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspect, maintain, and repair locomotives, including oil changes, part replacement, cleaning, and adjustments.
Diagnose and troubleshoot diesel engine malfunctions and perform required repairs.
Assemble and start engines, operate welding equipment, lubrication tools, and other mechanical repair tools safely and efficiently.
Prepare inspection and maintenance reports and accurately document work according to company procedures.
Operate locomotives within workshop tracks and conduct post-repair testing.
Working Conditions:
Irregular shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime.
Work in workshop and outdoor environments under all weather conditions.
Occasional work in confined spaces and at heights.
Frequent bending, lifting (up to 50 lb / 22 kg), kneeling, climbing, and crouching.
Occasional travel required.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver’s license; commercial license preferred.
Experience with diesel engines or completed diesel mechanic program.
Ability to use measuring devices and interpret readouts.
Strong mechanical aptitude, hand-eye coordination, and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and adapt to different situations under stress.
Basic computer skills.
Teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Training:
Paid training including 3 weeks at CN Campus, at least 2 weeks in workshop (practical), followed by 3 additional weeks at CN Campus.
Training covers components, control systems, pneumatic brakes, locomotive starting, basic diesel/electrical systems, CN maintenance regulations, engine systems, fuel, oil, water, air, and power assemblies.
