Canadian National Railway (CN) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Mécanicien d’Équipement Lourd et de Matériel Remorqué (Heavy Equipment Mechanic) to join its maintenance team in Grand Falls, New Brunswick. Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on locomotives and other railway equipment in accordance with CN and federal standards.

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot diesel engine malfunctions and carry out necessary repairs efficiently and safely.

  • Perform major and minor overhauls, adjustments, and component replacements (including oil changes, cleaning, and realignments).

  • Assemble, start, and test locomotive engines to ensure proper operation.

  • Use welding, lubrication, and repair tools (electrical and oxy-acetylene equipment) with a strong emphasis on safety and precision.

  • Prepare detailed maintenance and inspection reports in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.

  • Conduct test runs on repaired locomotives along shop tracks.

  • Occasionally travel and work outdoors in various weather conditions and confined spaces.


Working Conditions:

  • Shift-based work schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime.

  • Combination of indoor and outdoor work environments, often under variable weather conditions.

  • Frequent physical activity, including bending, kneeling, lifting up to 22 kg (50 lb), squatting, and climbing.

  • Occasional travel and work at elevated heights.


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Experience in diesel mechanics or completion of a diesel mechanic diploma/apprenticeship program.

  • Valid driver’s license (commercial license preferred).

  • Strong understanding of diesel engine mechanics, hydraulics, and electronics.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and measurement devices.

  • Welding skills and basic computer proficiency are assets.

  • Must be capable of working independently and collaboratively under pressure while maintaining high safety and quality standards.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills with a customer-focused attitude.


Training and Development:

CN offers paid on-the-job training combining theoretical and practical instruction.

  • Training duration: approximately 4 years, depending on prior experience.

  • Curriculum includes diesel and electrical systems, air brakes, control systems, locomotive start-up procedures, and CN maintenance standards.

  • Training structure:

    • 3 weeks at CN Campus

    • 2+ weeks of hands-on shop experience

    • 3 additional weeks at CN Campus

Completion of the training program is essential for long-term progression within the organization.
