Hatchery Manager

Description:

Maple Leaf Foods Inc is seeking a Hatchery Manager to oversee the Wetaskiwin hatchery’s overall performance. This role is responsible for ensuring the hatchery produces a high-quality product that meets customer needs while complying with all regulatory guidelines and maintaining cost efficiency. The Hatchery Manager will cultivate a culture of continuous improvement supporting regulatory compliance, animal welfare, quality, health & safety, marketing, and human resource standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage production costs, labor utilization, yields, and results from Operations Cost Improvement and Six Sigma initiatives.

• Ensure compliance with Production Control Plans (PCP) and food safety audit targets.

• Continuously improve operating costs/processes using CI and Six Sigma methodologies.

• Foster a positive employee relations environment through effective initiatives.

• Lead development of both salaried and hourly staff.

• Develop and implement capital improvement plans and budgets for the hatchery.

• Achieve or exceed customer service levels by synchronizing processes across functional areas.

• Manage performance of cross-functional teams, applying HR policies and Leadership Edge initiatives.

• Set and achieve all Health & Safety targets.

• Support marketing and product development initiatives.

• Maintain compliance with CFIA, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment, and other relevant legislative bodies.

• Monitor and communicate advancements in genetics, equipment, and sanitation through industry contacts.

• Ensure balanced supply of raw materials to the hatchery.

• Responsible for budget development, adherence, and hatchery EBIT.

• Achieve or exceed earnings results while delivering quality products meeting customer expectations at lowest cost.

• Continuously evaluate policies, programs, and resource effectiveness to meet short- and long-term strategies.

Candidate Profile:

• Post-secondary education in food science, business, engineering, or operations management.

• 5-10 years of management experience, with 5-7 years specifically in management roles.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills including proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

• Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills.

• Strong analytical and reporting skills.

• Proven ability to drive continuous improvement and decision-making using tools like SWOT analysis and Six Sigma metrics.

• Results-oriented and able to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
