General Laborer

Description:

Gerdau North America, a leading organization in the scrap metals and steel recycling industry, is currently seeking Laborers for their Mississauga, Ontario location. This is an on-site, full-time, entry-level opportunity designed for individuals who are eager to begin their careers in industrial operations. No prior experience is required, but a strong work ethic and willingness to learn are essential.

As a Laborer at Gerdau, you will play an integral part in daily yard operations including scrap material inspection, equipment operation, and general maintenance. The role offers the opportunity to develop new skills in mobile machinery handling, safety procedures, and yard logistics. Key Responsibilities:

• Follow all established Gerdau safety and environmental procedures.

• Operate equipment such as forklifts with progression to loaders and material handlers.

• Inspect incoming scrap materials against quality standards and assist in grading and purchasing decisions.

• Apply deductions to non-conforming materials by communicating with the scale house or inspectors.

• Perform daily Routine Equipment Care (REC) and report issues promptly.

• Maintain cleanliness and organization in the work area.

• Remove hazardous materials from scrap (e.g., gas tanks, propane tanks, batteries).

• Assist with rail operations where applicable (shifting cars, setting brakes, operating locomotives).

• Participate in non-ferrous metal sorting and general housekeeping.

• Deliver high-quality customer service to vendors, drivers, and fellow employees.

Additional Duties (Rail-Enabled Locations):

• Operate rail locomotives.

• Manage railcar movements and track switching procedures.

• Secure loaded/unloaded railcars using brakes and wheel blocks.

Qualifications:

• High school education is preferred but not mandatory.

• Must demonstrate a desire to grow within the company and develop skills.

• Strong communication skills and safety-first mindset.

• Legal eligibility to work in Canada without need for current or future sponsorship.
