General Accountant

Description:

Munich Re Canada is looking for a General Accountant to join their team on a 12-month contract. The role involves managing the general accounting for assigned MR Canada entities, including AP, expense allocation processes, quality assurance, controls, reporting, and analytics for internal management. The position requires collaboration with internal and external stakeholders in a dynamic team environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Take a key role in month/quarter/year-end closing processes, ensuring the accuracy of P&L and BS accounts and supporting the audit file.

• Perform quarterly expense allocation cycles and Functional Area processes ensuring accuracy.

• Understand cost drivers and a complex system of cost centres, ensuring regular reviews and accuracy.

• Produce internal management information and commentary on expense driver developments and maintain internal Power BI dashboards.

• Prepare and provide intercompany billing to affiliates and reconcile intercompany balances.

• Coordinate quarterly accrual collections, review, quality assurance, and reporting with cost centre managers.

• Own fixed asset schedules, calculate depreciation, and ensure purchases/disposals are recorded correctly.

• Contribute to the creation and maintenance of the annual expense plan, providing quality assurance and commentary.

Secondary Responsibilities:

• Assist with core system changes, ensuring adherence to accounting policies and internal controls.

• Establish, maintain, and update accounting procedures to improve efficiency and internal control.

• Support the cash function to balance business cash requirements and investment opportunities.

• Assist in the audit process by preparing supporting documentation.

• Provide guidance and training to junior team members.

Required Education:

• University or College degree with a specialization in accounting

• CPA designation or pursuing CPA

Preferred Experience:

• Knowledge of Windows and MS Office applications

• 5+ years of accounting experience

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel

• Experience with complex cost centre structures & allocations

• Strong analytical skills with the ability to ask "why?"

• Effective communication skills across all levels of the organization

• Ability to meet deadlines under pressure

• Accuracy and attention to detail

• Ability to work in a team environment

• Willingness to adapt to changing business requirements

• Working knowledge of Power BI preferred
