Description:
The Government of Yukon’s Department of Community Services is seeking a Field-Based Water and Wastewater Services Technician for a full-time permanent role within its Operations and Programs Branch. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the delivery and maintenance of water and wastewater services to unincorporated communities across Yukon. Working directly in the field year-round, you will contribute to the environmental and public health standards in these communities while performing essential maintenance, operational, and monitoring tasks.
As the most diverse department in the Yukon Government, Community Services fosters sustainability, safety, and wellness across 18 unique branches. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to impact public infrastructure, while gaining exposure to a wide variety of technical trades and community services.
Conduct routine operational tasks at multiple water treatment and wastewater sites, including:
General labour (shoveling, brushing, painting, chipping ice, etc.)
Equipment calibration and exercising valves
Interior and exterior cleaning of facilities and grounds
Bacteriological sample collection and delivery to Environmental Health
SOP development and issue documentation
Troubleshoot and perform basic repairs in:
Plumbing: pipe gluing, pump seal replacement
Mechanical: diagnostics using pressure readings
Electrical: wiring, voltage testing, valve testing
Communicate technical problems and solutions with operators, vendors, tradespeople, and government agencies through both verbal and written correspondence
Source and purchase replacement parts with accurate specifications
Support student mentorship in partnership with the Yukon Water and Wastewater Operator Program (YWWOP)
Proven experience in basic plumbing, mechanical, or electrical maintenance
Familiarity with indoor/outdoor general maintenance tasks
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
Background in trades work is a valuable asset
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Self-motivated and able to work independently in remote environments
Ability to adapt and remain composed in high-paced or stressful situations
Knowledge of workplace safety hazards and legislation
Comfortable conducting labour-intensive tasks
Interest in pursuing Small Water Certification under EOCP guidelines
Valid Class 5 Yukon driver’s license (or equivalent)
Must be willing to travel frequently (primarily day trips, occasional overnights)
Role is entirely field-based, year-round in all weather conditions
