First United Church Community Ministry Society—a deeply rooted charitable organization serving Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside for over 140 years—is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Facilities Manager. This full-time, on-site role is ideal for a seasoned facilities professional who is passionate about ensuring safe, efficient, and well-maintained environments while working with a community-focused organization committed to social justice, dignity, and equity.
As the Facilities Manager, you will oversee the complete operational functionality of all First United buildings, coordinating repairs, supervising staff, managing budgets, and ensuring full compliance with safety and building codes. This is a pivotal leadership role that balances hands-on operations with strategic planning and stakeholder communication.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintenance & Repairs: Coordinate preventive maintenance, handle HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, manage repair schedules and contractor relationships.
Safety Compliance: Conduct regular safety inspections, maintain emergency preparedness protocols, ensure adherence to building codes.
Operational Oversight: Supervise janitorial services, manage waste disposal, optimize energy use, and handle procurement of necessary supplies.
Vendor Management: Negotiate and manage service contracts for security, maintenance, and cleaning services.
Budget Management: Handle facilities budget of $300,000–$500,000, track expenses, and identify cost-saving initiatives.
Project Oversight: Lead renovation projects, system installations, and facility upgrades.
Team Supervision: Lead, coach, and manage the facilities team.
Communication: Act as liaison between departments and stakeholders for all facility-related matters.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Minimum of 10 years' experience in facilities management, preferably in a unionized or nonprofit setting.
Degree or certification in Facilities Management, Engineering, or related field.
BOMA designation and HVAC 4th class Power Engineer credential required.
Proven skills in project management, budgeting, leadership, and stakeholder communication.
Excellent problem-solving abilities with deep knowledge of building codes and safety regulations.
A calm, empathetic, and professional demeanor when interacting with vulnerable populations.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, perform physically demanding tasks, and work in various environmental conditions.
Additional Requirements:
Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector) clearance.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
Must live within 20 km of 320 East Hastings St., Vancouver.
Availability to respond to emergencies outside of working hours.
Special Training: Standard First Aid (within 3 months), NVCI and Mental Health First Aid are assets.
