Description:
The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of 541 Eatery & Exchange (541) in keeping with the strategic direction and plan established together with the Board of Directors and the foundational beliefs upon which the work and ministry operate. Working alongside the Board, employees and volunteers of the organization, the Executive Director ensures the Purpose, Mission and Values are integrated into and carried out through day-to-day operations. The Executive Director is also tasked to ensure the organizational and financial sustainability of 541 and is a key participant in the work required toward independent charitable status for 541. At present, 541 operates under the charitable status of Compass Point Bible Church.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership:
Participates with the Board of Directors in maintaining a Purpose and Strategic Plan to guide 541, adjusting as required.
Identifies, assesses and informs the Board of Directors of internal and external issues and trends that affect the organization and where required, the actions planned or to be taken in response.
Fosters teamwork and collaboration between the Board and the Executive Director and between the Executive Director, employees and volunteers of 541.
Ensures ongoing organizational vitality and operational excellence in fulfilling the Purpose through regular evaluation of overall operations and by ensuring the quality and effectiveness of administration and operations, fundraising, communications and systems.
Operational Planning and Management:
Develops an operational plan with goals and objectives that support the fulfillment of the strategic plan of 541.
Reviews recommendations to policy changes and provides the authority to implement new or revised organizational policies; reviews existing policies on a biennial basis and implements changes as appropriate.
Oversee the design, planning, delivery, implementation and evaluation of the 541 model, services and special projects and initiatives.
Oversee the 541 Senior Leadership Team to ensure the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization.
Ensures the operation of the organization meets the expectations of relevant stakeholders: Board, Regulators, Patrons and the varied community of Funders.
Obtain required knowledge and understanding to support the Operations Manager in ensuring all requirements, including appropriate training for staff and volunteers, are in place to obtain successful safety inspections such as fire safety, public health inspection and business license.
Human Resources Planning and Management:
Establishes a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of skilled people; maintains a positive, healthy and safe work environment that functions in keeping with all appropriate legislation and regulations.
Recruits, interviews and selects Senior staff to fulfill key leadership roles such as Operations Manager, Hospitality Manager and Donor Engagement Co-Ordinator.
Supports the Senior Leadership Team in hiring competent employees and recruitment and selection of volunteers, all of whom are in full agreement with the Purpose and Strategic Plan of 541 and possess the right skills, competencies and personal capabilities to contribute to the work of 541.
Addresses employee and volunteer performance and behavioural issues as they arise, using appropriate and constructive approaches that are consistent with the organization’s values. As a last resort, makes recommendations for releasing employees and volunteers when appropriate to the issue and in accordance with the organizations By-laws or governing documents and aligned to best practices for terminating employees and volunteers.
Ensures job descriptions are developed, regular performance evaluations are held, where required, and sound human resource practices are in place.
Supports the Senior Leadership Team in coaching and mentoring employees and volunteers to improve performance and encourage ongoing development.
Financial Planning and Management:
Works together with Senior Leadership Team and Board to prepare a comprehensive annual budget.
Supports the Operations Manager to ensure sound financial practices are maintained, ensuring 541 operates within budget guidelines and proper bookkeeping and financial records are maintained.
Approves expenditures within delegated authorities.
Supports the Donor Engagement Co-Ordinator in identifying and researching funding sources, the development of fund-raising plans and writing funding proposals.
Support the Senior Leadership in reviewing sales revenues regularly to set targets, adjust pricing or adjust menu options to ensure sales revenue covers cost of goods sold.
Participate in funding development activities including building relationships, hosting events, making presentations and asks and other tasks required by the fund-raising plan.
Supports the Operations Manager in ensuring all financial and tax requirements for the organization are fully met and executed according to current laws and regulations.
Community Relations/Advocacy:
Nurtures and develops strategic, collaborative relationships between 541 and churches, businesses, community groups and organizations, funders, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization.
Communicates with stakeholders to keep them informed of the work of the organization and to identify trends and changes in the communities served by 541.
Represents as and where required to enhance the organization's community profile.
Risk Management:
Identifies and evaluates the risks to the organization's people (patrons, employees, management, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image and implements measures to manage and control risks.
Ensures that the Board of Directors and the organization carries appropriate and adequate insurance coverage; ensures that the Board and management understand the terms, conditions and limitations of the insurance coverage.
Ensures all privacy requirements are met and the confidentiality of information is maintained in keeping with regulatory and legislated requirements.
Qualifications, Experience & Education:
Mature follower of Jesus Christ including an authentic lifestyle demonstrating consistent character and spiritual growth.
In full agreement with the Purpose, Mission Statements, Values and Beliefs of Compass Point Bible Church and 541 Eatery & Exchange.
Experience in leadership and/or management of a charitable/ non-profit organization.
Previous experience in food services administration/management an asset.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people, including staff and patrons.
Experience working with individuals who are marginalized or considered vulnerable due to their socio-economic status.
Experience in or knowledge of safe harm reduction techniques and practices to support mental illness and addictions.
Knowledge of all federal and provincial legislation applicable to voluntary sector organizations including employment standards, human rights, health and safety, charities, taxation, CPP, EI, health coverage,
Knowledge of current community challenges and opportunities relating to the mission of the organization.
Knowledge of operations, human resources, financial and project management.
Adaptability: Demonstrate a willingness to be flexible, versatile and/or tolerant in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency.
