Coinbase, a leading global platform dedicated to increasing economic freedom through cryptocurrency and blockchain innovation, is seeking an Engineering Manager (Institutional - Foundations) to lead critical engineering teams that power institutional-grade crypto products. This role offers an exciting opportunity to build the foundational systems driving next-generation financial infrastructure for institutional clients worldwide.

As an Engineering Manager, you will balance hands-on technical leadership with strategic project direction. You’ll collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, designers, and senior leadership to design, implement, and scale sophisticated distributed systems that underpin Coinbase’s institutional offerings—including Coinbase Prime, Advanced Trade, Custody, and Exchange.

You’ll mentor talented engineers, promote a culture of quality, and guide architectural decisions ensuring scalability, security, and operational excellence. This role requires a deep understanding of building and maintaining multi-tenant systems, balancing innovation with stability in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor engineering teams responsible for mission-critical institutional product systems.

• Translate product vision into tangible, actionable roadmaps and deliverables.

• Oversee architecture design, code quality, and operational reliability of large-scale systems.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful delivery and performance at scale.

• Act as a hands-on technical leader—participating in code reviews, incident management, and bug triage.

• Recruit, coach, and develop top engineering talent aligned with Coinbase’s technical and cultural values.

• Drive continuous improvement in engineering quality, reliability, and delivery processes.

Key Requirements:

• Minimum 7 years of experience in software engineering, with at least 1 year in management.

• Proven experience designing and operating distributed systems at scale.

• Ability to blend strategic thinking with tactical execution.

• Hands-on proficiency in software engineering practices, architecture, and troubleshooting.

• Deep passion for blockchain, crypto innovation, and decentralized finance.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience scaling engineering teams rapidly (e.g., from 10 to 100+ engineers).

• Familiarity with blockchain technologies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).

• Technical experience with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, and PostgreSQL.

• Experience developing financial systems requiring high reliability and security.

• Practical knowledge of on-chain activities, Ethereum transactions, and decentralized applications (dApps).
