Description:
Queen’s University is seeking an Assistant Director, Engineering to join its Facilities team. Reporting to the Director, Operations & Engineering, this role is responsible for leading engineering strategies, ensuring compliance with codes and standards, and delivering high-quality, innovative, and sustainable engineering services to support the university’s teaching, research, and campus community.
The successful candidate will be a mechanical engineering expert, with a strong understanding of other engineering disciplines, and a proven ability to lead professional engineers and staff in delivering safe, efficient, and client-focused facilities services.
Lead development of short- and long-term engineering plans, performance targets, and safety initiatives
Provide administrative accountability for engineering programs, budgets, and project delivery in compliance with codes and legislation
Oversee mechanical design, project review, commissioning, and handover of major construction projects
Direct mechanical assessments, surveys, and complex engineering problem-solving
Guide, mentor, and manage engineering staff, including hiring, training, performance management, and labour relations
Ensure engineering services align with Queen’s University’s climate action plan and energy conservation goals
Collaborate across Facilities and campus stakeholders to ensure client-focused service delivery
Participate in deferred maintenance strategy, budget oversight, and procurement processes
Promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and a positive team culture
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s an asset)
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
10+ years experience in mechanical system design, energy efficiency, and facilities management
Strong knowledge of Ontario Building Code, OHSA, and related laws/regulations
Management and project leadership experience in engineering environments
Familiarity with Archibus IWMS, Revit, BIM modeling preferred
Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license
Clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
Approve and certify mechanical engineering designs
Develop and amend engineering policies, procedures, and standards
Manage budgets, procurement, and project resource allocation
Resolve client service and engineering issues
Recommend long-term capital improvements and maintenance priorities
Oversee staff hiring, training, evaluations, and discipline
