Description:
Hitachi Rail GTS Canada Inc. is seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Technical Specialist – Safety Assurance, internally titled Electrical Engineer, to join their team in Toronto, Ontario. This position plays a key role within the Safety Assurance & Independent Validation department, contributing to the safety compliance of signaling and train control systems and ensuring all processes align with international standards.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and managing safety assurance processes, carrying out independent assessments and audits, and ensuring compliance with railway safety regulations such as CENELEC Railway RAMS standards. This role is vital in guaranteeing that all Hitachi systems are safe for deployment and meet both technical and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as Safety Assurance Manager (SAM) for assigned projects.
Implement and enforce processes aligned with international standards and industry best practices.
Conduct safety audits and independent assessments of commercial projects and product development.
Identify and escalate safety-related technical issues for timely resolution.
Lead and advise on safety-related decision-making.
Support bid and proposal activities to address technical and contractual safety requirements early in project life cycles.
Investigate safety-related incidents and extract lessons learned.
Verify Safety Cases and ensure documentation meets safety authority standards.
Stay updated with safety assurance practices across industries like rail, aerospace, nuclear, and automotive.
Interface with Independent Safety Assessors (ISA) and Safety Authorities.
Key Requirements:
Minimum of 10 years of experience working with safety-critical systems.
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, or a related field.
Proven experience in safety audits, assessments, and incident investigations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Strong understanding of railway signaling systems: CBTC, SSI, CBI.
Familiarity with safety design processes and standards such as:

MoD 00-55 / 56 / 58
ARP 4761
IEEE 1474
AREMA
Proficiency in safety techniques: FTA, FMEA/FMECA, HAZOP/HAZID.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Membership in Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE) is considered an asset.
