Education Assistant

 

Description:

This position reports to the Manager, Undergraduate Learning Services, and works under the direct supervision of the RAO Director and the RAO Education Specialist.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Presentations and demonstrations that highlight and explain the research conducted at the University of Calgary and current astrophysics research to students and visitors at the RAO.
  • Research and design of program themes and intent based upon the latest research in astrophysics and educational theory. Explore current topics and thoughts in science pedagogy to improve on educational techniques.
  • Commitment to acquire competence and knowledge on the fundamentals of physics & astrophysics and keep abreast of new discoveries.
  • Represent the University of Calgary and the faculty of science to the general public.
  • Engage community, school groups, youth groups, and diverse groups in science education and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) initiatives on behalf of the department of Physics and Astronomy. This includes attending trade shows, science fairs and events. Become familiar with relevant science curriculum (Grade 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, senior high) to connect teachings in a continuous way.
  • Coordinate with the Team Astro volunteer coordinators to continue the develop the RAO's stellar volunteer opportunities which benefit students with education and practical hand- on activities.
  • Assist with programming, this includes answering visitor questions, operating telescopes, delivering presentations, and creating a welcoming and fun atmosphere for visitors.
  • Assist with all aspects of program operations including scheduling, preparation, communication with teachers or group organizers, ensuring program requests are met, risk management requirements and revenue collection and accounts receivable.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University Degree in Education or Museum Studies, or BSc in Astrophysics or a related Science field.
  • Applicants with other relevant education related to Educational Programming or Museum Management or Administration, in combination with experience and training, will be considered.
  • Knowledge of fundamental physics and or astrophysics, telescope technology is an asset.
  • Proven experience in program design and related administration operations.
  • Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to engage the University of Calgary community and greater community towards positive outcomes and ensure progress on initiatives.
  • Experience with public presentations and demonstrations to diverse learners is an asset.
  • Ability to speak and explain scientific concepts to a diverse range of learners in both small and large group settings.
  • Ability to occasionally move objects weighing as much as 15 kg.
