Description:
The Law Society of Ontario is seeking a skilled and dedicated Discipline Paralegal to represent the organization in regulatory proceedings before the Law Society Tribunal. This role involves preparing cases for hearings, managing a high volume of discipline files, and contributing to the development of strategies for prosecutions. As a Discipline Paralegal, you will work under the supervision of your Manager and collaborate with the Litigation Services Department to ensure that all cases are handled effectively and expeditiously.
Your responsibilities will include case preparation, drafting legal documents, managing evidence, communicating with relevant parties, and conducting legal research. You will have the opportunity to work independently while ensuring compliance with established caseload priorities and performance metrics. This is a hybrid role, allowing for flexibility with a combination of home and office work based on departmental requirements.
You will play a crucial role in managing the full scope of disciplinary proceedings, from preparation to negotiation, ensuring that the law society’s interests are effectively represented. Your expertise will be essential in maintaining high-quality work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, making significant contributions to the success of the department.
Key Responsibilities:
Case Preparation: Develop case strategies, assess evidence, prepare witnesses, and draft various documents such as authorization memos, notices of application, affidavits, and hearing materials.
Client/Customer Service Delivery: Communicate with Law Society staff and complainants regarding case progress and outcomes. Provide advice on investigation files as directed.
Performance Management: Independently manage a high volume of cases while meeting performance metrics, timelines, and strategic goals. Contribute to the development of standardized practices and guidelines for case handling.
Team Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues in the Litigation Services Department to ensure that discipline matters are handled efficiently and within set timelines.
Research and Law Application: Conduct necessary legal research and negotiate narrow issues of fact and law to ensure thorough case development.
Qualifications:
A college diploma or university degree and a license in good standing with the Law Society as a paralegal.
Minimum of 5 years of experience prosecuting or advocating in litigation, regulatory, or government environments.
Understanding of the Law Society’s mandate, services, legislation, and policies.
Knowledge of basic legal principles and their application in a litigation or administrative law setting.
Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and electronic search software.
Expressive and persuasive in both spoken and written communication.
Ability to analyze and reason through written and spoken information effectively.
Willingness to travel as needed for witness interviews and prosecutions, both within and outside the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
