AFL, a global leader in fiber optics and telecommunications solutions, is seeking a Design Technician to join its Canadian Operations based in Brant, Ontario. The company is renowned for delivering innovative and sustainable end-to-end solutions for broadband networks — from engineering and construction to installation and repair.
Founded in 1984 with a single product, fiber optic ground wire, AFL has evolved into a billion-dollar enterprise offering thousands of products and services across multiple markets. (Japan), an $8 billion global organization with over a century of innovation, AFL provides a dynamic environment for professionals who thrive on creativity, technical expertise, and global collaboration.
The Design Technician will play a pivotal role in the planning and preparation of aerial and underground FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) network designs, ensuring all technical drawings and documentation adhere to regulatory, municipal, and client specifications. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical acumen, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset, supporting various teams through design development, revision control, and project execution.
Prepare and develop design layouts for aerial and underground FTTH networks including conduit routes, handholes, splice plans, and fiber paths.
Create high-level, municipal consent, and construction-ready design packages that are precise, compliant, and presentation-ready.
Ensure adherence to all applicable standards including CSA, OESC, CRTC, and municipal access regulations.
Revise design packages based on feedback from QA/QC teams, clients, and permitting authorities.
Review vendor-submitted designs for compliance, accuracy, and constructability, providing corrective input when necessary.
Conduct peer reviews to maintain design quality and standardization across projects.
Utilize AutoCAD, GIS (QGIS/ArcGIS), and related software to create accurate network maps, shapefiles, and permit drawings.
Incorporate data from LiDAR, photogrammetry, and municipal datasets into design packages.
Verify and categorize address point data (SFU, MXU, MTU, commercial) for network planning.
Support municipal consent and right-of-way submissions, ensuring all packages meet approval standards.
Assist project management and construction teams with as-built records and final documentation.
Participate in field surveys and site walks to validate designs, propose adjustments, and ensure constructability.
Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely delivery and clarity of project requirements.
Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, GIS, or a related discipline.
3+ years of experience in telecom OSP or FTTH network design.
Proficiency with AutoCAD, SPIDA Calc, O-Calc, Quick Pole, and GIS tools such as QGIS or ArcGIS.
Solid understanding of aerial and underground fiber design methodologies, including splice planning and duct assignment.
Familiarity with Ontario permitting processes (Municipal Consent, Joint Use, MTO, Conservation Authorities) is an asset.
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and ability to interpret technical drawings, survey data, and utility records.
Strong communication and teamwork abilities, with the capability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
