Description:
AFL, a global leader in fiber optic solutions and a subsidiary of Fujikura Ltd., is seeking a Design Technician to join its Canadian operations in Brant, ON. AFL delivers engineering, construction, installation, and repair services that support broadband networks, with a strong focus on innovation, safety, and sustainability. This position offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment while contributing to critical network infrastructure projects.
The Design Technician will be responsible for preparing accurate and compliant design packages for both aerial and underground FTTH networks. This includes creating layouts, ensuring compliance with industry standards, reviewing vendor designs, incorporating field data, and supporting construction and project management teams. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, attention to detail, and experience with telecom design processes and tools.
Key Responsibilities include:
Preparing design layouts for aerial and underground FTTH networks, including conduit routes, splice plans, and fiber paths.
Producing high-level, municipal consent, and issued-for-construction design packages.
Ensuring drawings are polished, accurate, and compliant with CSA, OESC, CRTC, and municipal requirements.
Performing revisions based on QA/QC reviews, client feedback, and permitting authority requirements.
Reviewing vendor-submitted designs for compliance, accuracy, and constructability.
Conducting peer reviews to maintain quality and consistency across projects.
Using GIS, AutoCAD, and related tools to produce accurate network maps and permit drawings.
Incorporating LiDAR, photogrammetry, and municipal land-base datasets into design packages.
Supporting municipal consent, joint use, and right-of-way applications.
Assisting construction teams in preparing accurate as-built records.
Participating in field surveys and site walks to validate routes and structures.
Collaborating with stakeholders to ensure project requirements are met.
Qualifications:
Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, GIS, or related field.
Minimum 3 years of experience in telecom OSP or FTTH design.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, SPIDA Calc, O-Calc, Quick Pole, or GIS platforms (ArcGIS, QGIS).
Strong knowledge of aerial and underground fiber design methodologies.
Familiarity with Ontario permitting processes is an asset.
Strong attention to detail and ability to interpret survey data and construction drawings.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Knowledge of pole loading analysis, make-ready engineering, and utility coordination.
Exposure to construction workflows, QA/QC, and redline updates.
