Trans Mountain is seeking a collaborative, motivated, and values driven individual to join our dynamic team as Data Engineer. In this position, you will play a key role in supporting the development and maintenance of data pipelines and data systems that help the business use information effectively, while ensuring data is accurate, available, and secure. This position offers the opportunity to support the delivery of reliable data for operational, financial, and regulatory reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the building and maintaining of data pipelines that move, transform, and deliver data between systems in the correct format for reporting and analysis.
- Learn and apply best practices for data integration, processing, and pipeline development.
- Monitor data jobs and pipelines to ensure they run as expected and escalate failures, delays, or incorrect data outputs as needed.
- Support basic troubleshooting and issue resolution with guidance from more experienced team members.
- Work with analysts and business users to provide clean, usable data for reports, dashboards, and business decision-making.
- Prepare datasets and complete simple data transformations as required.
- Adhere to company standards for data access, privacy, and security to ensure sensitive data is handled appropriately and shared only with authorized users.
- Support compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements related to data management.
- Work closely with IT staff, including developers and analysts, by asking questions, sharing updates, and contributing to team discussions and projects.
- Build an understanding of company systems, data processes, and team practices.
- Create and update basic documentation for data pipelines, processes, workflows, changes, and technical steps in alignment with team standards.
- Help ensure knowledge is documented and shared across the team.
- Continuously build skills in data engineering tools, coding, and data platforms through training, mentoring, and hands-on project work.
- Take initiative to improve technical knowledge and contribute more independently over time.
- Perform data validation and basic quality checks to ensure accuracy, consistency, reliability, and integrity.
- Identify data issues and report findings to managers or system owners.
Qualifications And Professional Experience
- Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline.
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer certification is an asset.
- A minimum of 1 year of progressive experience.
- Preferred certifications include CBIP, Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals or Azure Data Engineer Associate, and AWS Cloud Practitioner.
- Experience working in an Agile SCRUM team and with data engineering tools such as Spark, Azure Data Factory, Fabric, Databricks, Snowflake, and Microsoft Purview.
- Knowledge of business functions, processes and business terminology.
- Strong understanding of integration, business intelligence, and data governance concepts.
- Business analysis experience; understanding the business domain, drawing out requirements, communicating, managing expectations and documentation.
- Basic knowledge of SQL and working with data in databases.
- Familiarity with data pipelines, ETL/ELT concepts, or data processing tools.
- Understanding of basic programming concepts (e.g., Python or similar language).
- A track record of delivering high‑quality work, managing competing priorities, and supporting key business processes or operational functions.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds and levels across the organization.
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to convey information clearly, respectfully, and professionally.
- Proven organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast‑paced environment.
