Description:

The University of Toronto, under the Institutional Research and Data Governance (IRDG) office, is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Data Architect to lead the institution’s data-related initiatives. This role will involve shaping and executing the University’s data roadmap to enhance data security, strengthen data assets, and improve institutional data governance.

The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Manager of Data Engineering and Business Intelligence, collaborating with central IT teams and diverse stakeholder groups to design scalable, robust, and secure data solutions. The role includes developing efficient data models, cleaning and optimizing data structures, implementing governance practices, and leading technical projects with long-term institutional impact.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead data architecture strategies to create a unified data framework across the institution.

  • Design scalable, secure, and sustainable data solutions to improve data accuracy, integrity, and accessibility.

  • Oversee data classification, archiving, access control, and lifecycle management to ensure compliance and security.

  • Develop and enforce enterprise-level data governance policies and standards.

  • Architect and optimize existing data warehouses to enhance operational efficiency.

  • Lead technical projects involving data integration, database refactoring, and predictive analytics.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure solutions are sustainable and aligned with the university’s objectives.

  • Act as a technical lead for IT projects, defining requirements, scope, cost, and resources.

  • Create, review, and maintain physical and logical data models, roadmaps, and naming conventions.

  • Implement disaster recovery, high availability, and performance monitoring measures.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • At least 8 years of experience in data architecture roles.

  • Expertise in SQL Server, MySQL, Azure, and ETL programming.

  • Strong background in data modelling, query performance tuning, and database administration.

  • Experience with cloud and on-premises solutions, data lakes, predictive analytics, and data transformation frameworks.

  • Proven ability to lead complex IT projects and manage multiple stakeholders.

  • Strong communication skills at both technical and business levels.

Assets (Non-Essential):

  • Experience with Azure Data Factory, Power Platform, and MS Fabric (OneLake).

Salary & Benefits:

  • Monthly Salary: CAD 9712 – CAD 12420

  • Includes annual step progression with a maximum of CAD 149043.
