Description:

The Salvation Army, a renowned non-profit organization serving communities across Canada and Bermuda for over 130 years, is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Custodian to maintain cleanliness, safety, and upkeep of its Fort St John facility and surrounding property. This role is crucial in ensuring that all areas of the building, both inside and outside, are kept clean, safe, and presentable, while also performing minor repairs and ensuring facility security.

Key responsibilities include cleaning floors, windows, washrooms, dusting, vacuuming, and disposing of garbage; maintaining exterior areas such as lawns, sidewalks, and gardens; restocking supplies; and performing occasional deep-cleaning tasks like stripping/waxing floors and shampooing carpets. The custodian will also monitor and perform basic preventative maintenance, handle minor repairs across trades (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting), report safety hazards, and ensure building access and security when required.

The position involves occasional communication with residents, clients, guests, staff, and volunteers, requiring courtesy, tact, and problem-solving skills. Physical requirements include lifting over 20 lbs (sometimes exceeding 40 lbs), operating industrial cleaning equipment, working in varying weather conditions, and managing exposure to potentially hazardous materials and situations such as infectious diseases, chemicals, and sharp objects.

Qualifications:

• Some high school education (WHMIS training preferred)

• 3–12 months of relevant cleaning and maintenance experience

• Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, integrity, confidentiality, and adaptability

• Ability to work independently, multi-task, and uphold safety standards

• Willingness to undergo background checks, vulnerable sector screening, driver’s abstract verification, and mandatory online training
