Description:

As Curator, you should have extensive knowledge of Alberta’s labour history, including paid and unpaid work, manufacturing, industry, resource development, trade, technology, retail and labour organizations. You will supervise one direct report.

Your primary focus is to develop collections, contribute to public galleries, and undertake public outreach, education and communication, taking into account the interests of stakeholders and the public, and mindful of the diversity of Alberta’s labour history. This work requires you to have excellent research skills, experience with material culture, a strong publication record, and a wide professional network.

Your main responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Increasing and enhancing knowledge of Alberta’s employment, labour, and industry through independent, interdisciplinary and coordinated research
  • Developing and curating an object-based collection
  • Communicating knowledge to inform and educate Albertans about labour and industry
  • Identifying opportunities to further the museum's goals and strategic direction as they pertain to employment, labour, occupations, resources, trade and industry heritage
  • Supervising staff to ensure delivery of program products and services, to promote staff satisfaction, and to maintain a safe working environment.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (such as labour, industry, employment history, museum studies) with 1-3 years’ experience in a cultural institution

Equivalency: Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a cultural institution

Additional requirements:

  • Demonstrated written productivity, including publications in peer-reviewed literature
  • Experience in collecting and handling material culture objects
  • Must be able to travel within Alberta
  • Class 5 Driver’s License
