The Division leads in the sustainable management of the province’s natural resources so that BC’s natural heritage is preserved for years to come. Water is one of these natural resources.

The Water Management Branch is accountable for operational delivery of provincial water programs including managing and regulating the allocation of water resources, ensuring safe and reliable community water supplies; and protecting public health and safety through River Forecast Centre operations, flood hazard management, regulation of dikes and dams, and supporting emergency response. The Dam Safety Section is responsible for regulation of approximately 210 major dams >9m high across the province and leadership and provision of specialist expertise to the Provincial Dam Safety Program which operates under a distributed organizational model and has regulatory oversight of approximately 1,900 dams across the province, many of which are high profile, high risk and high cost.
