The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. Based in Montreal, Quebec, RI-MUHC is dedicated to advancing scientific discovery and innovation in patient-centered medicine. The institute seeks a Clinical Study Budget & Contract Negotiation Specialist to lead budget development and negotiation for complex, high-value clinical studies.
Budget Development & Coverage Analysis (45%)
Translate clinical trial protocols into comprehensive budgets aligned with Fair Market Value (FMV) benchmarks.
Conduct detailed coverage analyses to distinguish sponsor-billable procedures from standard-of-care services.
Utilize standard medical coding systems (diagnosis and procedure codes) for accurate cost benchmarking.
Incorporate overhead, staffing, and institutional cost recovery requirements into budgets.
Document FMV sources and coverage analysis for audit readiness.
Collaborate with departments including study teams and the grant office.
Provide advice to the contract office to ensure all financial and legal clauses are accurately included in agreements.
Support principal investigators (PIs) with budget reviews for investigator-initiated studies and coordinate with the pre-award team.
Sponsor Negotiation (45%)
Serve as lead negotiator with sponsors for high-value, multi-phase clinical studies (Phases I–III, both oncology and non-oncology).
Defend institutional costs using FMV data and historical benchmarks.
Secure favorable financial terms, including payment schedules and minimized holdbacks.
Track and report key negotiation performance indicators (KPIs), such as negotiation cycle time and cost recovery margins.
Documentation, Compliance & Insights (10%)
Maintain audit-ready documentation for FMV and coverage analysis.
Analyze negotiation outcomes to refine internal pricing models and strategies.
Provide data-driven insights to management for continuous improvement.
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Finance, Business, Health Administration, or a related field.
Experience: At least 5 years in clinical research budgeting and sponsor negotiation.
Skills Required:
Expertise in FMV principles, coverage analysis, and clinical research operations.
Knowledge of standard medical coding systems for research budgeting.
Strong negotiation skills with proven measurable outcomes.
Excellent communication and diplomacy skills; bilingual (English/French) preferred.
Work Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday (35 hours/week).
Work Sites: Glen Site and Montreal General Hospital.
Status: Full-time, contractual position.
Not a hospital position.
Competitive salary range from $55,692 to $103,412 annually (based on experience).
4 weeks of vacation, increasing to 5 weeks after 5 years of service.
