Description:

The Region of Peel is hiring a Clinical Behavioural Support Specialist for the Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) Mobile Team to enhance the quality of life for residents with responsive behaviours and personal expressions in long-term care homes across the Central West region.

This mobile, on-site role involves working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams and Long Term Care Home (LTCH) staff, implementing evidence-informed best practices that promote person-centered, non-pharmacological interventions. The specialist also mentors and coaches staff in developing effective behavioural support strategies while helping build long-term capacity.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide person- and family-centered care in line with the BSO framework

  • Collaborate with healthcare providers and BSO networks to manage responsive behaviours

  • Prioritize and assess behavioural support referrals in coordination with LTCHs

  • Deliver holistic assessments and develop tailored care strategies considering personhood and environment

  • Use tools such as PIECES, GPA, Cornell, and GDS for behavioural assessments

  • Promote and support Montessori© and behaviour reduction activities

  • Coach LTCH staff on non-pharmacological strategies and best practices

  • Support residents in transitioning across sectors while ensuring continuity in care strategies

  • Communicate effectively with families, staff, and leadership

  • Participate in ongoing education, training, and BSO Network meetings

  • Respond to emergencies upon request of LTCHs

  • Follow all safety regulations and organizational procedures


Required Qualifications:

  • Diploma or degree in Health Sciences

  • Registered with a professional college (e.g., RPN, RN, OT, Social Work)

  • Valid “G” driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle

  • CPR & First Aid Certification

  • Vulnerable Sector Police Check and TB Skin Test

  • Knowledge of dementia care, complex mental health, and neurological conditions

  • Familiarity with Ontario’s Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021

  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and conflict resolution skills

  • Effective oral and written communication in English

  • Organizational, time management, and team collaboration abilities


Assets (Preferred but not mandatory):

  • Training in Change Management, PIECES©, U-First, GPA, DementiAbility, Montessori©-based programming

  • Experience in behavior coaching and staff training

  • Knowledge of best practices for mental health and behavioural support in long-term care
