Caretaking Supervisor

 

Description:

The University of Toronto’s Facilities & Services Division is seeking a Supervisor, Caretaking for a 6-month full-time term appointment. Reporting to the Area Manager, the Caretaking Supervisor will oversee caretaking staff across multiple buildings at the St. George Campus, ensuring that all facilities remain safe, clean, comfortable, attractive, and sustainable for the university community.

This role involves supervising staff, overseeing day-to-day operations, conducting inspections, and analyzing service delivery processes to recommend improvements. The University of Toronto manages more than 120 buildings, totaling 12 million square feet, and operates a large-scale district energy system supporting over 150 buildings, making this a high-impact position within one of Canada’s leading institutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day caretaking operations across designated campus buildings.

  • Manage and supervise caretaking staff, including lower-level supervisors (lead-hands).

  • Conduct routine building inspections to ensure compliance with cleanliness, safety, and sustainability standards.

  • Verify inventory of equipment and ensure proper use of cleaning materials and supplies.

  • Monitor and enforce waste management and recycling programs.

  • Analyze service delivery processes and recommend operational improvements.

  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and accountable working environment aligned with U of T’s values.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Industry certification (e.g., ISSA, APPA) considered an asset.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Lead Hand or Service Worker in caretaking.

  • Strong supervisory/management experience is a strong asset.

  • Proficiency in the use of all cleaning materials and equipment.

  • Valid full Ontario G driver’s license required.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.

  • Ability to work tactfully with diverse stakeholders while maintaining high standards of customer service.

Employment Details:

  • Contract Term: 6 months (full-time, budgeted role).

  • Work Schedule: Afternoon shift – 4:00 PM to 12:15 AM.

  • Employee Group: USW (United Steelworkers).

  • Pay Band: USW Pay Band 10 – CAD 72,119 with annual progression up to CAD 92,226.
