Caretaker

Description:

The Salvation Army in Canada, a faith- and values-based organization serving communities for over 130 years, is seeking a Custodian/Caretaker for its Simcoe Community Church. This role is responsible for ensuring the facility is maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition, in compliance with organizational standards and health & safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Performing routine janitorial duties such as emptying garbage bins, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, and maintaining cleanliness in all assigned areas.

• Ensuring kitchen and washrooms are kept hygienic, stocked, and sanitized at all times.

• Carrying out spot cleaning, carpet shampooing, stripping/waxing floors, and window cleaning as required.

• Monitoring supplies (cleaning materials, hygiene products, etc.), maintaining proper stock levels, and recording inventory.

• Conducting minor repairs (painting, patching, replacing light bulbs, basic plumbing tasks).

• Setting up and tearing down spaces for events as required.

• Ensuring security of property, including doors and windows, and monitoring building safety.

• Maintaining the external property by clearing snow/ice, salting walkways, litter pick-up, watering plants, and maintaining storage sheds.

• Following prescribed sanitation, WHMIS, and building disinfecting protocols.

• Contributing to workplace health & safety by identifying hazards, conducting inspections, and adhering to OH&S standards.

Working Conditions:

• Permanent part-time position based on 12 hours per week (flexibility required, with possible additional hours).

• Physical tasks include lifting/moving up to 39 pounds, bending, twisting, mopping, operating cleaning equipment, and occasional ladder use.

• Requires high attention to safety when handling chemicals and equipment.

Qualifications:

• Completion of High School education.

• Current WHMIS certification or willingness to obtain.

• At least one year of prior related custodial or maintenance experience.

• Knowledge of Health & Safety standards.

• Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Must pass applicable background checks and screening.
