Job Description:

The Car Repairman I performs mechanical and welding repairs on rail tank cars and related components. The role involves hands-on work with heavy industrial tools, welding equipment, and safety-critical systems. Candidates should demonstrate technical aptitude, physical ability, and a commitment to safe work practices.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform welding on tank car components (tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc.).

  • Conduct welded repairs using air arc cutting torches and stick or wire welding equipment.

  • Use hand and power tools to grind welds, chip slag, and smooth surfaces.

  • Repair, straighten, or rework car parts (brakes, underframes, gears, couplers, valves, etc.).

  • Conduct welding and mechanical repairs on tank and hopper cars as required.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, reporting any safety hazards.


Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required (or must pass a basic skills test).

Skills & Experience:

  • Basic welding experience (preferred but not mandatory).

  • Ability to read and interpret measurements (e.g., rulers, blueprints).

  • Mechanically inclined with a good understanding of repair tools and processes.

  • Strong attention to safety, quality, and detail.


Environmental & Physical Conditions:

  • Moderate to heavy physical labor required.

  • Must lift and carry tools and equipment to job sites.

  • Requires climbing, balancing, and working at heights (on top of railcars).

  • Exposure to potential x-ray and welding hazards; safety compliance is mandatory.

  • Work performed primarily in an industrial/outdoor setting.
