Board Of Directors Opportunity

Description:

Fighting Blindness Canada (FBC), the country’s largest charitable funder of vision research, is seeking passionate, skilled, and visionary professionals to join its Board of Directors. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a national organization dedicated to ending vision loss caused by blinding eye diseases through world-class research, advocacy, and community engagement.

With over 50 years of impact, FBC has invested $42 million in over 280 research grants, leading to more than 800 scientific discoveries in areas such as gene therapy, stem cell innovation, pharmacological research, and vision technology. As the leading voice in Canada’s vision health community, FBC also provides vital education and advocacy for those affected by blindness and vision loss.

As a member of the Board of Directors, you will help steer the organization’s strategic direction, uphold governance excellence, and serve as an ambassador to advance FBC’s mission of accelerating research, providing expert information, and supporting individuals living with vision impairment across Canada.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide governance oversight of FBC’s strategy, mission, and financial health through quarterly meetings and policy reviews.

  • Support the organization’s mission, programs, and fundraising initiatives while understanding its strategic priorities.

  • Actively participate in at least one Board committee or task force as assigned by the Board Chair.

  • Serve as an ambassador for FBC — representing the organization in community, advocacy, and fundraising events.

  • Attend educational and community-based activities to enhance FBC’s visibility and partnerships.

  • Assist in fundraising and resource development, including making a personal donation aligned with your capacity and supporting at least one annual event.

  • Suggest and recruit potential new Board members who bring value and expertise to FBC’s governance team.

  • Ensure compliance with laws, ethical standards, and the organization’s by-laws.

  • Maintain transparency, integrity, and confidentiality during Board deliberations.

  • Support the President & CEO through guidance, performance oversight, and mission alignment.

  • Promote diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in all FBC initiatives and engagements.

Qualifications & Desired Profile:

  • Proven leadership experience in governance, business management, healthcare, finance, law, or research.

  • Strong understanding of non-profit governance principles and fundraising practices.

  • Strategic thinker with a collaborative approach to problem-solving and community leadership.

  • Passionate about vision research, healthcare innovation, and improving the lives of Canadians living with blindness.

  • Previous experience serving on a Board or advisory committee is considered an asset.

  • Demonstrated integrity, accountability, and the ability to engage constructively in deliberations.

  • Must be a Canadian resident or citizen with availability to participate in quarterly meetings (virtual or in-person).
