Assurance Manager

 

Description:

Bateman MacKay LLP (BMCA) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Manager, Assurance to join their Assurance/Audit team based in their Mississauga office. This hybrid role offers a balance of on-site and work-from-home days. The Manager will provide leadership for the Assurance department’s daily operations, client relationship management, and team development, focusing on successful, on-budget, and on-time client engagement completions.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Leadership

  • Stay current with industry trends and developments; share insights within the firm.

2. Client Relationship Management

  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, acting as primary contact during engagements.

  • Represent the firm at industry and community events (networking, conferences, webinars).

3. Department & Team Leadership

  • Assist with departmental planning, budgeting, and workflow forecasting.

  • Recommend and implement process improvements.

  • Lead recruitment, retention, development, succession planning, and performance management.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship.

  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and accountable team environment.

  • Provide regular feedback supporting both technical and personal growth of team members.

4. Financial Management (WIP)

  • Manage client engagements ensuring profitability and budget compliance.

  • Approve engagement budgets and monitor deadlines.

  • Participate actively in weekly team workflow meetings.

5. Compliance & Risk Management

  • Support oversight of regulatory compliance and internal policies.

  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current.

  • Ensure adherence to ethical and legal standards.

6. Client Work

  • Review preparers’ work for accuracy; mentor team members.

  • Lead client onboarding and draft meetings.

  • Communicate proactively with Partners and team regarding client issues.

  • Identify opportunities for new services and cross-selling.


Skills & Qualifications:

  • Extensive technical expertise in Canadian accounting, assurance, and compliance.

  • Strong knowledge of Canadian Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE), with assets in IFRS, ASNPO, ASPP.

  • Experience with Canadian Auditing Standards (CAS).

  • Familiarity with Canadian corporate tax (T2 preparation is a strong asset).

  • Knowledge of business regulations including HST/GST, EHT, WISB, payroll, government programs.

  • Proven experience leading audits and review engagements, managing teams, deadlines, and budgets.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for client and team interactions.

  • Ability to develop collaborative solutions and identify cross-selling opportunities.

  • Strong leadership, emotional intelligence, and team motivation skills.

  • Strategic thinker with sound business judgment.

  • Financial acumen to manage budgets and analyze performance.

  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

  • High technical ability, compliance with professional ethics and firm policies.

  • Proficiency in MS Office and accounting software (CaseWare Hybrid, CCH iFirm TaxPrep, Jazz-IT, Datasnipper, Mindbridge).

  • Ability to handle pressure, multitask, and maintain accuracy.


Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Taxation, or related field (or College Diploma in Accounting).

  • CPA designation required.


Other Requirements:

  • Criminal record and judicial matters check mandatory.

  • Credit check required.

  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada.

  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle required.
