Associate Tax Consultant

Provide a comprehensive range of property tax consulting services to both new and existing clients, delivering practical, results-driven advice across complex property tax matters. With a strong focus on the oil and gas sector, the practice offers specialized consultation tailored to industry-specific challenges. The team plays a key role in expanding and strengthening DMA’s property tax consulting capabilities, helping position the firm as a leading provider of property tax advisory services throughout Western Canada.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
 

  • Assist in oil and gas assets portfolio including wells, pipelines, facilities, and related infrastructure.
  • Update, monitor, and maintain internal web-based Property Tax application containing clients’ property tax data
  • Assist in property tax payments
  • Assist with annual Request for Information (RFI) responses
  • Review and analyze assessment and tax notices to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with provincial legislation and municipal bylaws.
  • Conduct detailed field and desktop inspections of oil and gas assets to verify asset existence, classification, depreciation, cost inputs, operational status and asset inclusion/exclusion.
  • Assist with hearings on behalf of clients when required
  • Interpret and apply provincial assessment manuals, regulations, and evolving policy changes.
  • Assist with property tax forecasting
  • Gather assessment information from assessing jurisdictions
  • Network and develop relationships with Senior Tax Consultants and Tax Managers across DMA to identify opportunities and share best practices
     

Non-Essential Duties And Responsibilities
 

  • Provide support to Sr. Tax Consultant, Tax Managers, and Directors
  • Monitor legislative, regulatory, and market developments impacting oil and gas property taxation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
     

Education And Qualifications
 

  • Working towards a College Diploma or University Degree in Real Estate, Economics, Appraisal and Assessment, or a related field
  • 1-3 years’ experience working in an Assessment/Appraisal position or other relevant experience
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Self-motivated, ability to demonstrate initiative
  • Ability to work in a team and independently
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with DMA business development and sales personnel, clients, and Municipal assessment and tax staff
  • Some overnight travel may be required
