Archives Assistant

 

Description:

The Salvation Army Archives is seeking an enthusiastic and engaged digitization assistant for the 2025 summer term. Reporting to the Director of Archives, the Archives Clerk position involves ensuring the growth and maintenance of the Salvation Army Archives' digitization project as well as support and involvement in the overall strategic priorities of the Archives. This position is funded, in part, by Canada Summer Jobs, Service Canada, and as such, applicants must meet the program requirements.

Accountabilities

Scans and describes archival materials, including photographs, documents, records, periodicals etc., using established procedures and archival standards.

Ensures proper handling, retrieval, and refiling of archival materials.

Collaborates with staff with any required conservation as needed to prepare materials for digitization and preservation of items for storage.

Creates archival quality images and ensures quality control throughout the project.

In some cases, the digital images may require photo editing or processing to correct original flaws.

Uploads digital images and corresponding metadata into the database.

Undertakes research assignments as directed.

Assist Assistant Director with maintenance of social media and the Archives website.

Assist with displays and presentations as directed.

Other duties as required.

Preferably enrolled in a related undergraduate or graduate level program such as History, Archival Studies, Library Science, or a related discipline

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

Knowledge and familiarity with Salvation Army history, mission, administrative structure and terms is a definite asset

Experience in an Archive or Museum environment would be an asset.

Interest and experience in working with heritage or cultural collections.

Understanding of copyright and online privacy issues would be an asset.

Familiarity with digitization hardware including scanning and audio/visual reproduction equipment.

Good attention to detail.

Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Interact well with volunteers, fellow staff members, and visitors.

Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;

have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;

Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
