Applied Scientist

Description:

Thumbtack is seeking an Applied Scientist to focus on Large Pro Growth, helping to balance supply and demand in their marketplace and strategically grow high-capacity, licensed professionals. This role is part of the Applied Science team, which leverages machine learning, causal inference, and optimization to acquire, retain, and expand large professionals while enhancing overall customer experience.

The Applied Scientist will develop, deploy, and optimize ML models for supply shaping, lead scoring, churn prediction, pro preferences optimization, and marketplace matching/ranking. They will also design and execute marketplace experiments, analyze diverse datasets, and collaborate closely with engineering, product management, business development, and marketing teams to deliver impactful solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead applied science initiatives to drive acquisition, retention, and expansion of large professionals.

• Develop ML models and algorithms for targeted pro acquisition, churn prediction, preference optimization, and marketplace ranking.

• Design and execute experiments to measure the impact of models and strategies on business metrics.

• Analyze internal and external data to identify trends, opportunities, and risks for marketplace supply health.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful implementation of ML systems in production.

• Balance speed of execution with scientific rigor in problem-solving.

• Explore new features, algorithms, and data sources to improve supply shaping models.

Qualifications & Skills:

• Expert knowledge of machine learning techniques (classification, anomaly detection, NLP).

• Proficient in Python programming.

• Strong statistical knowledge, including experimental design, optimization, and causal inference.

• Ability to break down complex problems and deliver impactful solutions.

• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

• Proven ability to lead seamless project execution in fast-paced environments.
