Anaesthesia Assistant

 

Description:

William Osler Health System, a recognized leader in healthcare and one of Canada’s top diversity employers, is currently hiring an Anaesthesia Assistant – Surgical Services to join their Brampton facility. This is a contract-based, full-time, on-site role for approximately 18 months, covering the duties of a temporarily vacant position.

The Anaesthesia Assistant will serve as a critical part of the anesthesia care team, supporting anesthesiologists in surgical and procedural areas such as the operating room, peri-operative and post-operative units, labour and delivery, and other departments involving anesthesia. The position involves both clinical and technical responsibilities, providing direct patient care and ensuring safe anesthesia practices under the supervision of anesthesiologists.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer anesthetic gases and medications under direct supervision

  • Monitor stable patients under general anesthesia

  • Provide conscious sedation and manage depth of anesthesia

  • Assist in regional and neuraxial procedures

  • Perform airway management and insert/manage intravenous and arterial lines

  • Continuously assess patients during anesthetic administration

  • Function as a key member of the interdisciplinary allied health team

  • Maintain high standards of patient safety and anesthesia care delivery


Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an accredited Respiratory Therapy or Nursing Program

  • Completion of the Michener Institute Anesthesia Assistant Program (or equivalent)

  • Registered with either:

    • College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO) or

    • College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)

  • Certified Clinical Anesthesia Assistant (preferred)

  • Bachelor's degree or recognized equivalent (preferred)

  • Minimum 2 years of recent anesthesia assistant experience in an operating room

  • Pediatric anesthesia experience (preferred)

  • Completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

  • Strong communication and independent decision-making skills

  • Willingness and flexibility to work across multiple hospital sites as needed


Work Schedule & Additional Info:

  • Duration: Approximately 18 months (or until return of previous incumbent)

  • Shifts: Day/Evening rotations, 8-hour shifts

  • On-call & Weekend: Required

  • Internal Application Deadline: April 21, 2025
