The APN Intern will train as a future Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) and develop expertise in clinical practice, education, mentorship, research, leadership, and organizational management. Successful candidates are required to complete a Post-Master Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Master of Nursing - Neonatal Nurse Practitioner education program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive health care for critically ill newborns and their families within the NICU.

  • Integrate nursing and medical knowledge within a broad scope of advanced nursing practice.

  • Foster interprofessional collaboration in care planning.

  • Provide family-centered health education tailored to specific needs.

  • Lead planning for successful NICU discharge and transitions to community hospitals.

  • Identify and connect families with relevant community services and specialized care.

  • Offer specialty consultation on neonatal care within and outside the hospital.

  • Promote high-quality, safe, and evidence-based clinical practice.

  • Mentor and coach nursing and interprofessional colleagues.

  • Evaluate and implement research-based innovations to improve patient care.

  • Disseminate new knowledge through formal and informal channels.

Required Strengths and Skills:

  • Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (general class, good standing).

  • Eligibility for RN-Extended Class registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

  • Leadership experience at bedside and/or unit level.

  • Strong critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to act as a change agent and foster teamwork and consensus-building.

  • Knowledge of theoretical and conceptual frameworks with practical application.

  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in healthcare practice.

  • Must secure enrolment in a Post-Master or Master of Nursing - Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program.
